So. What in the hell is the original
drawing here supposed to be. The land of best guesses is where I
reside now, trying to understand my teenage intentions. I know I also
have an angel drawing that goes with this one and a devil one as well
and they all have halos (??).
So who is Wyn? Is she some sort of
purgatory angel? Maybe. But I think, based on the design I put on her
dress, that she was meant to represent reality. Satan is for evil,
angels are for good, but who represents the people who are just
trying their best? In steps Wyn.
I think the zigzags arrows on Wyn's
dress are meant to represent the choices we make in life as we make
forward progress. Sometimes we make hurtful and ignorant choices.
Sometimes we make choices that are more thoughtful and kind. The
choices we make form the timeline of our lives: up and down, up and
down.
There seems to be (in my opinion) a
comparatively small amount of humans that have ever lived who
deserve to burn in hell for all eternity. There is an even smaller
amount of people since the beginning of time who lived having never
done one cruel or harmful action. So the idea of Wyn, the idea of her
character as a sort of deity for regular folks, those of who are just
trying our best and are willing to learn from our mistakes- that idea
makes sense to me still.
In many of the redraws I have tried to
ground my drawings in something more closely resembling reality. For
Wyn, I was inspired by her *ahem* ample gifts as well as her
unnaturally thick hair so I made her some sort of burlesque dancer.
With satin-y 50s style undergarments and a jaunty prop, she's ready
to perform. What does that have to do with her original concept? Not
a ding-dang thing.
Art tips: This will be my first
positive art tip! I really like the way redrawn Wyn's hosiery looks.
I color the redraws using a vector art based program and I tried many
experiments to get it to look right. Using her skin tone as the base
and darkening it from there just didn't look right. I ended up
copying the shape and applying it as a layer of semi-transparent
black over a base of her skin tone. It had more in common with
actually putting on a pair of stockings in real life than it did with
drawing someone wearing stockings. So I guess my tip is, if you find
yourself in this same (very specific) situation, try layering it the
colors to achieve a more realistic effect.
