When I was a kid my Dad rented
Poltergeist (1982) on VHS for my family to watch together on a movie
night. (Side note: remember the middle class? It was great.) This had
three long term effects on my family.
One, my Dad learned that not
all PG films are created equally (a point which my mother continued
to helpfully drive into his head again and again and again after the
fact). Two, my little brother had nightmares for a really long time
after that. And three, a lot of my toys starting having the name
Carol-Ann. Or, like in this case, Carrie-Ann.
Though I have no such excuse when it
come to the basic drawing, for Carrie Ann's redraw I was watching
Portlandia while I colored her in. She is . . . funky! I think she
turned out looking like a cross between a Daria character and Falcor,
the dragon from The Neverending Story (whose name I just remembered
without prompting, good god).
Art tips: I tried to add a little more
detail to the faces, specifically, darker areas round the eye
sockets. I think that is something I'm going to try more often
because, especially in this one, the faces are starting to look a
little flat to me. Also I tried a jean texture for the jacket which
turned out OK. I think I needed to make the grain smaller though and
also make the whole thing lighter. The tutorial I used made a really
great looking grain for a larger scaled pic. Check it out here.
