Tbt #18: Ageen

Lizard people unite! Ageen is the fashion representation of all things reptile. The original has a kindergarten-play type vibe because she's holding up her own wings.

There are two ways I could have gone for the redraw. The first being keep the same spirit of the original. All my more fantastic drawings from back in the day are grounded in the reality of “this is a person wearing a costume”. However, I decided to go with the second option and make the redrawn Ageen an actual physical monstrosity.

So when I was drawing this I thought of several features from the animal kingdom. First, the sort of segmented and plated bellies that snakes have. Second, the tongue that snakes have. And third the dinosaur-like spikes and ridges still found on animals like iguanas and Komodo dragons.

I also wanted her skin to have texture but honestly, I'm not sure it works here. I should have either drawn it out by hand or chosen something more scaly looking. Also, when I added the pattern to her plates I had a hard time later going in and adding shading over them so it's a little flat looking. I do think I nailed the blue and purple underbelly though.

Ageen, much like Sartep from a couple weeks ago, took a lot of passion to draw. She came out looking expressive of things that are going on in my head. Her look, unlike the cunning of a snake, appears apprehensive or even fearful. Whatever I was feeling when I drew this it leaked into the drawing.

Art tips: I regret outlining her head shape. I think it would have looked better without that line, with just the spikes used to define the shape. Oh well!
