Tasteful Nerdity: Watching These Shows Makes You Cool (Maybe)

Welcome to part two of the list that wouldn't die. Today I have 6-10 of my favorite TV shows. Since I am a “sensy”, I have included my warnings for sensitive people on this batch as well.

  1. Veronica Mars

Who doesn't love sassy teen detectives?
Romance! Mystery! Father/daughter dynamics! Romance! No seriously, this show might give you some pants feelings. Also, it's pretty teenagery so, like Buffy, it might be best enjoyed by the youths (but not necessarily!).

Episodes to watch: Season one is a perfect season of television. It gets a little dicey after that, but still enjoyable.

Episodes to avoid: I could not make it fifteen minutes into the recent Veronica Mars movie, so good luck with that.

I'm sensitive, should I watch this show?: That depends. It discusses some disturbing topics such as rape, which is generally a no-no plot point for me. But I think it's all handled pretty well and there are so many good moments of humor that it balances out OK.

  1. Slings and Arrows

It's a Canadian show about a Shakespeare production company! It's central characters are all middle aged people, there's a character who is a ghost, and every season a new play is being put on that ties thematically into the lives of the characters. This show really made me have a greater appreciation for Shakespeare (because anything is greater than zero). It also has some really interesting themes about relationships, growing older, and change. Plus, look for some early role work for Rachel McAdams and Joanne Kelly (Warehouse 13).

Episodes to watch: All of them. There are only three seasons of six episodes each.

Episodes to avoid: None.

I'm sensitive, should I watch this show?: Yeah, it's OK. It has an overall charming quality to it and the short seasons mean everything moves at a brisk pace, even the emotional stuff.

  1. The X-Files

Two FBI agents come together to investigate paranormal occurrences around the United States. One is a skeptic, one is a believer. Also: DO NOT BRING THIS SHOW BACK. Ugh. TV executives are minions of the devil.

Episodes to watch: I remember liking the monster of the week episodes the best so watch those. Watch the gross incest one (Season 4, Ep 2 Home) because that one was a big deal back in the day. Also watch the Carny one (Season 2, Ep 20). I read a novelization of that episode as a teen and was obsessed with trying to see it in reruns because I missed it's first airing due to the fact I was a child at the time. It was pretty magical when I finally got to see it.

Episodes to avoid: Don't watch season 9. No David Duchovney and it just doesn't work. Don;t watch the movies either, there are mostly all terrible.

I'm sensitive, should I watch this show?: Are you sensitive to grossness? Then use caution. Are you sensitive to extreme sexiness? Then you might not be able to handle the two leads. Are you bisexual? WATCH THIS SHOW.

  1. Rupaul's Drag Race

The reason I got into this show (besides my own sexual proclivities) was because it was a reality show where contestants actually had to have multiple talents. They have to sew, sing, act, dance, and design. They have to be able to paint themselves up and put together a fabulous outfit. Drag queens have to be able to look pretty, be funny, and PERFORM. It's an exciting blending of skills that results in pure eye candy.

Episodes to watch: I would say start with season four. Season four had the best villain (Phi Phi) and just some of my favorite contestants of all time (Hello Chad, Willam, Sharon, and Latrice!) It truly was an embarrassment of riches. After that I would suggest (if you refuse to watch them all) season 6 because Bianca Del Rio is one of the sharpest human beings I have ever seen on TV (more faves in this season: Adore, Courtney, Bendela, Milk)

Episodes to avoid: The latest season, season 7, was . . . not great. Also season one is quite different from the rest of them but don't worry because that season in nearly impossible to find online, even for money. Also, I found All-Stars kind of boring.

I'm sensitive, should I watch this show?: It's not a show for those who are easily offended. I'm not going to sit here and say that I don't occasionally say a soft “yikes” to some of the shit that occurs but it has never been enough to make me want to stop watching. Otherwise, I would say that this is a show about gay men and some of their backstories can be pretty brutal but they are usually not lingered on too long.

  1. Home Movies

Do you watch Archer religiously? Is Bob's Burgers scheduled viewing for you? You might have H. Jon Benjamin's Disease. Yes, those dulcet tones are known to have intense effects on the human body, however, withdrawal is not a recommended treatment option. Therefore continue basking in the glow of your ailment by watching Home Movies, a very funny animated show about a group of kids who film their own written movies . . . at home. It's endearing without being cutesy and emotional without being maudlin.

Episodes to watch: All of them, and there aren't nearly enough.

Episodes to avoid: None.

I'm sensitive, should I watch this show?: It's fine. You're gonna be OK! We're in this thing together.

Next week (maybe): 11-15!
