Project/Personal Updates

Update time! I've been as busy as a beehive full of beavers this week workin' on new projects. First off I've smashed together two of my more crafty pursuits to bring you fine people some new origami earrings. Bright, bold, and super cute these earrings are going to be real eye catchers.

Next up is a new ongoing project that I will debut this week. It's going to be an awesome experiment that fulfills a lifelong dream of mine- and it all started by accident! To debut this project  I have a cute pet video that will compliment the announcement.

Back to shop news, I have a bunch of new origami ornaments/chachkis coming soon in new sizes and themed collections. I'm also considering debuting something I never got off the ground the last time my shop was open: hand beaded cloth bracelets made from vintage ribbon/trim.

As for my other artistic pursuits I have a portrait I will be releasing soon of a favorite cult actress of mine. And don't worry: more Tbt redraws and comics are coming.

Last but not least I have a lot of exciting changes coming up in my life soon, some of which me and my partner are starting to work towards right now. One of the biggest changes involves getting him out of his horrible factory job and getting the both of us into a lifestyle that is more attuned to simple living. It's going to be a big change and I can't wait to document it.

If you want to follow my crazy project and schemes and/or help me and mine out with our goals please do any of the following:

Follow me on tumblr, where I post all my major pieces as well as lots of cool and exciting art and design stuff.

I'm working hard right now for everyone out there- not just to sell you stuff, but to entertain, amuse, and just otherwise bring joy into the world. Please take the time to follow me on any of the links I put above: every little bit helps!

Thanks and have a great day!

Tbt #11: Jessica Keevoe

It's a little known fact that artists can choose to use their powers for good or for evil. Good would be most likely something along the lines of bringing beauty into the world, trying to find a purpose and meaning in life, or making a political statement. Evil would probably be when art is created for less than noble purposes. This would probably have to be in the category of evil. I'm easing everyone into this harsh reality with Jessica Keevoe. To quote Jane from Happy Endings, this drawing was one for the ol' buzz bank.

Tbt #10: Paula Afenshpler

Paula Afenshpler: You have to admit, that's a pretty awesome surname. I don't have much to say about this character- she is not who I intended to run with today. However the character I DID want to discuss has been a one-two punch right in the feels, both in drawing it last week and in trying to describe it right now. So it's going to have to wait.

Tbt #9: Bette Jamison

“Obtaining a muse is much easier than finding a good quote about having a muse.” - Me

Bette Jamison is a muse, meant to inspire things in the other characters I created. She is one of a whole group of these that I created and, most bafflingly, saved in my binder of drawings for over 12 years.

Tbt #8: Ilse

So. Last year I discovered this blog called American Indians in Children's Literature. It is a super interesting look into the way Native Americans are represented in books aimed at impressionable youths. I don't have kids and I am not particularly interested in kiddie lit but the woman who runs the site, Debbie Reese, also discusses books that were around when I was a kid, such as The Little House on the Prairie series.

Tbt #7: Wyn

So. What in the hell is the original drawing here supposed to be. The land of best guesses is where I reside now, trying to understand my teenage intentions. I know I also have an angel drawing that goes with this one and a devil one as well and they all have halos (??).

Tbt #6: Kira Suarez

You know who people used to talk about a lot more back in 2000? J. Lo. That was the year she wore THE DRESS to the Grammys. Green, gauzy, super plunging neckline. I think in the last fifteen years the celebrity gossip cycle has sped up- something as silly as a dress might still be seen around the web for a few days but with Jennifer Lopez and this dress it seemed to be an endless rehashing. Late night comedians talked about it. It was plastered on every magazine cover. Trey Parker (of Southpark fame) wore a version of it to the Oscars later that year. It was condemned, celebrated, and leered at.

This brings us to Kira Suarez.

Tbt #5: Mingzhu

Today's drawing is a lesson in cultural sensitivity. I mentioned previously that I drew a series of drawings based on mythological deities. This is not quite accurate. This is one such drawing based on Guanyin, a Buddhist bodhisattva who is associated with the concept of mercy. Is any of that information reflected in this drawing? No. Would I, as an adult, draw from active religions again for inspiration? No, I would not. I would say, having led a pretty sheltered childhood, that I didn't have a huge grasp on why someone might take offense to having their deities lumped in with people like Zeus and King Arthur.

Tbt #4: Supsri

TBT #4: Supsri

Some of the drawings I did back in the day were very fantastical. A whole series within a series was of characters I drew to represent things like the elements, different mythological deities, and (like this one) abstract concepts such as emotions.
